How to book a fingerprints appointment in Spain (TIE)
The fingerprints appointment — «cita de toma de huellas» — is the in-person step where the Spanish National Police records your fingerprints, signature and photograph so your residence card (TIE) can be produced. It comes after your residence permit has been granted, never before.
It is booked through the official electronic office by choosing your province and the «toma de huellas (expedición de tarjeta)» procedure, then entering your NIE or passport number and your name exactly as printed in your passport. The appointment itself is free of charge.
The difficulty is not the paperwork: it is that slots are released in unpredictable blocks and disappear within minutes. That is the whole reason services like ours exist.
No slots available for TIE fingerprints: what to do
«No hay citas disponibles» means the agenda of the offices you selected is empty at that exact moment. It is not a refusal, it does not affect your file, and it does not consume any deadline.
Three things genuinely help: select every office in your province rather than the closest one, have your details written exactly as in your passport before you start, and try on different days — blocks are often released at the beginning of the month.
What does not help: refreshing the page for hours, turning up at the office without an appointment, or paying for an appointment booked in someone else's name. A booking under a different name is worthless at the counter.
Documents needed for TIE fingerprints in Spain
Your appointment confirmation (printed or on your phone); your valid passport, original plus a copy of every written page; the favourable resolution granting your permit; the 790-012 fee already paid and stamped by the bank; three recent colour photographs, 32 × 26 mm on a plain white background; the EX-17 application form, completed and hand-signed; and your previous card if you had one.
The 790-012 fee is paid before the appointment, at any collaborating bank or online with a digital certificate. Amounts for 2026 under Orden PJC/617/2025: €16.08 for a first temporary-residence TIE, €19.30 for renewals, €21.87 for long-term residence, €12.00 for family members of EU citizens and €9.84 for NIE assignment. Always use the amount printed on your own form.
If a single document is missing you are sent home and the appointment is lost — which in practice means weeks of waiting again.
What happens after the fingerprints appointment
The appointment takes five to fifteen minutes and you leave with a receipt («resguardo»). The card is then manufactured centrally, which usually takes three to six weeks depending on the province.
The card is never posted to your home: you have to collect it in person at a second appointment, booked separately under the «recogida de tarjeta» procedure. Keep the receipt — it is what you present to collect the card.
The receipt is not a travel document. If you need to leave Spain before the card is issued, apply for an «autorización de regreso» (return authorisation).
